THE NUMBER ONE REASON THAT PEOPLE FAIL-THEY DON'T LISTEN
Jesus said, "he that has an ear, let him hear." Whenever He made that statement, it was a heads up that something important was ready to be said. I've heard some preachers say, "do you have your catcher on." Give the audience time to prepare to listen; something good is coming.
One of the first things to learn as a successful pastor, counselor, or parent is to listen to those sharing their life with you. When someone begins to tell you about their complicated life problems, it's pretty easy to give quick answers.
You often think, well, I've heard this before, so to save time for everyone, do this, and you'll be better. However, as you listen and let them talk, most often, they will answer their problems. The answer will come if you give it time. It's not unusual in the people ministry that God has given me, as I listen, to do just that.
"Are you listening to yourself?" I often say, "That was a confession of your spirit speaking the answer."
However, things like that don't happen if you don't listen long enough because you will miss the big keys that make the difference.
After all, our loving heavenly father is the best listener of them all. We take up much prayer time by unloading our hearts to him. We confess things that have been buried deep within our souls. We cry over the grief that has not been expressed to anyone but him. We even complain at times about the slow service that Heaven seems to have, wondering where our packages are.
After it's all over and we feel better; now he finally speaks. Because he has allowed us to speak and he took the time to listen, we now have room to receive the words he gives us for our deliverance and healing.
So talk to the father tonight before you pull the covers over you heading for dreamland. Take time to express your heart. He will listen. When you're through, then you listen. That's where the fun begins.

PLAYING IT SAFE NEVER WON THE PRIZE
Satchel Paige, the first black American to break into National baseball and set many records, said this. "you will never be able to sneak to 2nd base if you don't let go of first base."
Just think for a moment how that simple statement fits just about everything you are challenged to do in life's journey. After all, the game of baseball does seem to illustrate life.
In life, we have a team called family and friends. In that close relation of the team spirit, we learn the game by depending on each other's skills to take the trophy home.
Coaches are given to us along the way to share their guidance and wisdom with us as a team. Some of them we call mothers or fathers; others could be pastors and teachers, but they all do one thing; transfer wisdom to us.
At some point in this game of life, we take our turn at the bat. This is the testing point of who we are; a risk taker or a safety player. Will we swing for the fence or try to make it to the first base and be safe?
They tell me the great Babe Ruth, who carried the home run records for many years, struck out more than he made home runs. He always swung for the fence because, in his mind, every time he was at bat, it was going to be another home run. The crowd loved "the babe" because, home run or strike out; he always was the same; he bowed to the crowd and showed them his love for the game.
You and I are in another type of game, an eternal one. We're on a team, the body of Christ. We have a coach, the Holy Ghost. We have assistant coaches all around us, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, and evangelists.
All of our coaches say the same thing. Take the risk and swing for the fence.

I HEAR THE SOUND OF HARVEST COMBINES
The farmer's work is never done, or so it goes. The farmer's work continues throughout the year from dawn till dusk in sunshine or snow. The one thing that encourages the farmer and his family to press forward is the promise of harvest time. The joy of harvest time makes it all worthwhile.
A surprising statistic from the state of Washington and Oregon is that we have some of the most extensive wheat fields in the nation. There is nothing more spectacular in the summertime than to see the harvesters coming in to reap those great fields of golden grain.
Because the fields are so gigantic and the time is so short for harvest because of the weather, a group of 10 or 12 combines will come in and go to work on one field. It's like watching a giant ballet perform as they do their magic harvesting food for a nation.
I woke up and heard the sound of a group of harvest combines coming toward me. The spirit told me the harvest is at hand, and the combines are coming.
For those who know the Scriptures, remember that Jesus said something like that when he said the fields are ripe unto harvest, but the laborers are a few, pray that harvesters will come into the field.
I believe the spirit is speaking to the church a prophetic word concerning the increase of harvest hands and combines that cover the field working together to bring in God's treasures.
It is always God's time for harvest, and he is not waiting for some future date to win the lost and turn the children back to their fathers. That is always in his heart.
The scriptures tell us, "today is the day of salvation."
David heard the sound of the army of the lord on the top of the mulberry trees. I am hearing the sound of an army of combines coming to the nations of the world and bringing in the greatest harvest we have ever known. Today is the day it's beginning. HARVEST HANDS NEEDED.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR
As we gather around our family Christmas tree and sing the familiar songs of this wonderful season, let us remember who it is all about. Much of the world around us has been lost in the commercial celebration of Christmas and has forgotten the reason for the season.
Remembering today that Jesus did not come to give us better ideas, and he did not come as a teacher; he came as a savior. The world did not need knowledge or more inventions; it needed to be rescued by a savior that would change history forever.
The Christmas season is focused on the birth of Jesus, celebrating the prophecies that had come to pass and the miracle of his virgin birth. For those who know him as Savior, don't stop at the manger scene and the shepherds watching their flocks at night. As marvelous as that was, the big show happened on the cross, and the resurrection and the ascension of Jesus to the father.
So we say merry Christmas and enjoy the season with all the enthusiasm and fun we love. We exchange gifts, remembering the joy of giving, eating together, laughing together, and thanking God for the families that he has given us.
While at the same time, we hear the background, the old testament prophets with over 300 prophetic declarations describing the coming of this baby that we celebrate today.
For unto us a Child is born unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder. His name shall be called wonderful counselor, mighty God the everlasting father Prince of peace of the increase of his government and peace there should be no end. Isaiah 9:6

MAKE YOUR DOG HAPPY-GROW UP IN CHRIST
Have you ever caught your dog looking at you with a strange expression? Then you go through the litany of questions you routinely ask them.
Do you have to go outside?
Are you hungry?
Do you want to play with your ball?
When there is no response, you return to what you were doing, and your dog wanders into the other room.
If you really knew what your precious pup was thinking, it would knock you off your chair. Because she has had her eye on you for quite a while, wondering when you're going to grow up and become the son/daughter of God that your called to be.
You do know that it wasn't their idea, these precious creatures that we love, to fall from the place of their original creation when Adam and Eve committed their crime against God. As it turned out, it was something God had to do, demoting them as he did so that they would stay below the authority and functioning level of the human that God created.
Since that time, according to the eighth chapter of Romans, all of creation has been holding their breath, standing on her tiptoes, as it were, looking and yearning to witness the unveiling of the sons of God.
So the next time your sweet little pet comes up to you and gives you that look, tell them you, too, are longing for that day when the sons and daughters of God will be fully manifested and functioning in their complete design.
Meanwhile, on the human level, we continue to be obedient to the call on our life, that is, to be like Christ in all our actions and deeds. We continue to commit ourselves to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, knowing that for all the things that the world strives for, God has his plan for that, also.
Rejoice, my friends; there are indeed great days ahead.

DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES
As I'm reading the eighth chapter of Romans again today, I have a flashback to my childhood and the games we played. As an all-American boy, I always carried my cap gun with me. And the dream of most of the boys in the 50s was they would have loved to be a cowboy or Davy Crockett.
Somewhere through most days, we would have a shoot-out with some imaginary enemy. One day it would be the Pirates; the next day, the renegade Indians or just robbers stealing our stuff.
The magic of those imaginary battles was that whenever I was shot moments later, I jumped up from the ground and yelled, "new man." Then, that new man would jump right back into the battle.
I thought of that again as the scripture tells us that our old man is dead. When Jesus died on the cross, we died with him because we were in him. So that when he rose from the dead, we also rose to newness of life.
Indeed we are a new man in Christ.
The wonderful byproduct of all that has taken place is that our body now has no dominion over us; therefore, sin does not reign in our mortal bodies.
Unfortunately, sin and the subject there has become a cottage industry for the Church. Much of the focus that comes from our theologians, i.e., teachers and preachers, is overly focused on sin; things we should not do, and what the sins are.
As a young Pentecostal Christian, it was very simplified for me because they gave us a detailed list of the sins. We didn't need the Holy Ghost to convict us; all we had to do was read the list.
Paul reveals to us in Romans eight that we have been freed from the tyrant of sin and are duty-bound to live in the sunshine of righteousness.

DON'T FORGET WHAT YOU SAW IN THE MIRROR
There's a term we use once in a while for people who are always looking inward to see who they are and what they are. We called them "naval gazers."
When we do that, we quickly find things to be discouraged over because of our human tendencies. As we gaze at ourselves, we lose track of who God made us and why he made us.
In the book of James, the first chapter, we are reminded that the word of God is the mirror that we look in to see our genesis. As we gaze into the word, we understand that we are a reflection of Jesus and made in his likeness.
However, James also warns us that many walk away from that mirror of the word of God and forget who God made them.
There is such a thing as false humility. We hear it in too many places in the Church. Statements such as "I'm just a sinner saved by grace." That statement sounds very pious at the outset, but it still ties us to our past.
The current reality is that I am a son of God and a joint air with Jesus Christ.
I am also aware that I am dead to sin and alive to righteousness.
But you say, how could that be true? I just failed again today.
I say back to you, "just get over yourself," and step into the reality of what God has made you and your purpose on this earth.
Go back again to the word of God that reflects the real you, the face of Jesus in that mirror. Then step into your destiny and be who God has called you to be.

THINKING PATTERNS ARE FORMED BY REFERENCE-EITHER FLESH OR SPIRIT
The scriptures tell us as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.
Romans eight and six in the mirror Bible makes the statement; thinking patterns are formed by reference. If you think on the flesh, you will be addicted to the flesh and suffer the consequences of failure and death.
However, if you think on spiritual things, you will enjoy tranquility of the soul and eternal life.
As obvious as the choice seems to be between life and death. It still takes the Holy Spirit to illuminate this truth in our hearts so we can believe in Jesus and receive eternal life.
My encouragement to you today is that you become addicted to spiritual thinking and not flesh thinking.
When you do, you will reap the harvest of spiritual thinking. The mirror Bible says; Tranquility flowing from my mind addicted to spiritual realities.
Philippians four and eight give us a "God list" to think from. Then it tells us if we think on these things, we will not be moved.

WILL THE REAL GOD PLEASE STAND UP
Judgment and wrath or mercy and grace. Which one can we expect from our heavenly father today? According to a disproportionate amount of preaching that we have heard from the pulpits of our nation, we can expect God to be full of wrath and judgment today.
Why?
Because we broke one of the many hidden laws, we didn't even know about. Such as evil thoughts, wrong actions, and even simple mistakes. According to some of our church background, you and I have been axed out of his love many times for the slightest infraction.
How many times have you heard something like this?
"God doesn't love little boys who hit their sister."
"God doesn't love you if you swear and take his name in vain."
Well, I'm sure you could probably fill in the blanks with your own story. Some of the teachings we had growing up in the church convinced us that any alteration from a strict set of rules would put God in a bad mood. And, of course, someone would quote the verse about not "falling into the hands of an angry god."
I never could figure out why God was always so angry. Then I would say something humorous like maybe he fought with his wife before he came to the office. Of course, I knew that wasn't true, but I got a laugh out of it anyway.
Better to laugh than to cry when you're dealing with an angry god.
If you've read this far into my thoughts today, you realize by now that we don't have an angry god; we have a loving heavenly father who will never stop loving us.
According to Roman in the eighth chapter, there is nothing you can ever come up with that will stop or even hinder in any way the love he has toward you. And as long as God's love is there for you, redemption and forgiveness are always on the table for the taking.

KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD
For the past 200 years, the church, as we know it, in our western evangelical theology, has had one primary message. Hurry up and get saved because Jesus is coming any minute. Then when we do get saved, they sit us in a seat to listen to the unending messages about waiting, waiting, waiting.
After a while, we begin to wonder, what in the world are we waiting for? Many traditional churches have put off to the future just about everything Jesus bought for us at Calvary. In some cases, it seems like death is what it takes to receive peace, healing, or understanding. And, of course, "when we die, we will see Jesus."
Two hundred years ago, the Plymouth brethren came up with a brilliant idea through a so-called prophecy that has given us this whole "kick the can down the road" mentality. The theories and speculations of the end times are endless as they wander through the Bible, looking for reasons to wait, wait some more, and some more.
However, the scriptures clearly give us action words such as "go into all the world and preach the gospel." These are commands of participation in a plan that God has to capture the world and bring it into the heart of Christ.
When the Scriptures give us the command "to occupy" until Christ comes, it is not a sit-down and wait for word; it's an action word. When a conquering army comes into a nation during a war, they occupy it. And because they do, they have the authority to bring it back to its purpose as a nation by restructuring all the things that have been destroyed.
As sons of God who have been sent from his heart to this earth, we have been commissioned to bring this world back to its rightful place. Under the submission to God, we are returning to the original plan that he reestablish through Jesus Christ.
You have all the tools today; you need to do what God placed you on this earth for. So let's get off the "rapture bus" bench (that may not happen by Thursday) and go to the work we have been called to. We are reconciling men and women back to the father.
