IT'S TIME TO SPEAK UP OR LOSE YOUR PLACE IN THE LINE

 

In my background, a person who would not speak up for themselves would be called a "mealy mouth." I'm not sure if that's a real word, but everyone knew what it meant. From the kid on the playground to the fearful housewife, their life became a living hell because they didn't speak up.

Our current culture has a term that says, "see something, say something." I think that pretty well frames the thought God dropped in my heart to speak of today. It's time for us to cry out to the Lord and the society around us.

During the years that Hitler's Germany prepared for the second world war was a slow erosion of social norms and private liberties. A Pastor named Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who eventually gave his life in resistance against the Nazi party and Hitler's oppression, made this statement famous. 

Speaking for the church, he said, "when they came for the Jews, we said nothing; when they came for the gypsies, we said nothing. Then when they came for us, there was no one to help."

We have lived in a bubble of self-denial that it could ever happen to us. But today, we face the same challenges by the voices that have risen around us demanding that we say what they want us to say and agree with what they believe in.

A law in the Old Testament said if a woman was raped and did not cry out, she became guilty of the same sin. I can only imagine why they wouldn't cry out; the fear of retribution or shame, all those things would be at play.

Today they are calling us names, trying to intimidate and bring shame.

We still have a voice that goes directly to the Father; it's time for us to cry out.

We still have the ability to speak up; when we see something to say something.

I guarantee that cowards will always back up and run if you resist them.
